The majority of sterile medical devices are transported by air or sea or rail; all will travel by road for at least part of their journey from manufacturer to the eventual user.

Designing medical device packaging is challenging. There are dozens of issues at any given time: design, sterilisation, material choice, labelling, end-user experience, and the list goes on and on. It's enough to cause a sleepless night or two.

A few weeks ago, I had a chance to spend a few days in rainy, wet London. The purpose was to attend an event at the Royal College of Art on design and healthcare. The "Smart Salon" was hosted by RCA's Helen Hamlyn Centre and my office, Smart Design Barcelona (hence the name).

When a company buys several machines of the same type for different locations, it might be forgiven for expecting the same parameter settings would be needed in each location. Sometimes the company will ask, "All our machines are the same. Can we just validate a sample?"

We all know package design creates market share in the food and cosmetic industry. And if you are the industry leader, "knockoff" brands often try to imitate your design so consumers will associate you with the less-expensive brand and buy the other brand because if the packaging is the same, quality of product is the same.
